The centerpiece of Chicago’s Christmas Ship event, the Captain At The Helm is undergoing renovation by it’s guardians, Shipmaster Memorial Inc. The Statue was a gift from the Chicago Lodge of Shipmasters International, the professional association of ship Captains who are licensed as Masters of Inspected vessels that carry America’s cargo and passengers on the waterways and high seas.

Captain Joe O’Connor, President of the Shipmasters Memorial organization was on hand to assure that the work was done on time.
The project was designed by Capt Robb and Capt Russel of the SMI Board in conjunction with other board members: Capt Camilla Ross and Capt Dave Truitt.
Done right this will last for many years
The project replaces damaged footings and restores the clarity of the engraved brickwork bearing the names of legendary Captains, their families and major donors.
Skilled workmen removed the damage footing material and replaced it with concrete separated by compression joints that should prevent such damage in the future. In addition the crew gave the statue a face lift that will restore it to its original splendor by the time the New Mac arrives.

We will be able to continue the tradition of the thousands of people who have participated in this event, the ceremonial goup shot at the end of the day at The Statue.
